蝙蝠在黑暗中如何指導自己飛行,不論如何黑暗,如何狹窄的地方,絕不碰壁,這是什麼原因?它怎樣知道前面有無障礙呢?

蝙蝠能夠避免碰撞,是藉一種天然雷達,不過是聲波代替電磁波,在原理方面完全相仿。從蝙蝠口中發出一種頻率極高的聲波,超過人類聽覺範圍以外,二位科學家藉著一種特製的電力設備,在蝙蝠飛行時,將它所發的高頻率聲波記錄出來。這種聲波碰到牆上,必然折回,它的耳膜就能分辨障礙物的距離遠近,而向適宜方向飛去。

微波是波長很短的無線電波,微波的方向性很好,速度等於光速。微波遇到任何物體都會立即被反射回來,再被雷達測速計接收。這樣一來一回,不過幾十萬分之一秒的時間,測試儀器就會顯示出所物體的距離或測出物體移動的情況。雷達或微波乃是類似廣播傳送器所發出的電波,也如蝙蝠口中發出一種頻率極高的聲波一樣, 只不過頻率較高出許多。我們把微波技術應用在家居燈具時,當人物或物體在微波的感應範圍內移動時,便會啟動感應器亮燈,物體静止或離開了感應範時就會熄燈
